2 Factors Behind Italy's Failure at Euro 2024

As the defending champion at Euro 2024, Italy was eliminated early. Former top player Fabrizio Ravanelli revealed two determining factors.

Italy failed miserably after crashing out in the round of 16. The Gli Azzurri won just one of their four matches (against a weak Albania side 2-1), before being dumped out by Switzerland following a 0-2 defeat.

A total of three goals were scored from just 11 attempts on goal. It cannot be denied that Italy's performance was not satisfactory enough, even when facing Spain and Switzerland.

Ravanelli collected 22 caps with Italy while still actively playing. According to the former Juventus and Lazio player, Italy's failure was due to coach Luciano Spalletti's tactics and the players' shrinking mentality.

"One of his biggest mistakes is that this Italian team cannot play with a back four," Ravanelli told Radio Deejay, reported by Football-Italia.

"There are players who cannot be part of the national team. If you're dynamic, you can't play at a high level nowadays. We can't create attacking solutions and have an identity, but the worst thing is that we don't have players with character."

"Some the players may be fit, and I just see fear in their eyes," continued the 1996 Juventus Champions League winner.

"The coach must instil a certain mentality. The national team does not represent us. There's no involvement or passion. I was lucky to wear the Azzurri shirt, and I used to feel very strong, but now many players are afraid to play," Ravanelli snapped.

Italy's failure at the 2024 European Cup has certainly not affected Spalletti's future. The FIGC has guaranteed that Spalletti will be retained until the 2026 World Cup.
